Xingda, Pirelli and NISCO Advance ISCC PLUS Certification, Pioneering Circularity from Scrap Steel to Tyre
2026-06-05
Shanghai, China – June 5, 2026 – Xingda, a leader in the industry of rubber reinforcement materials, together with Pirelli, a leading global tyre maker, and Nanjing Iron & Steel (NISCO), a pioneer in low-carbon steel production, have jointly obtained ISCC PLUS certification for the complete scrap steel recycling chain — from raw material sourcing and steel cord manufacturing to finished tyre production.
This ISCC PLUS pilot project, actively promoted by Pirelli and embraced by Xingda and NISCO, aims to introducerecycled steel into the ISCC PLUS approved materials list, marking a further step in the certification of the entire tyre supply chain under the ISCC PLUS scheme for the use of recycled steel.
The certification process validates a fully traceable circular model: ISCC PLUS-certified scrap steel is recycled into high-quality wire rod by NISCO, processed into steel cord by Xingda, and finally used into tyres manufactured by Pirelli. The initiative demonstrates how the three industry leaders at different levels of the value chain are working together under a unified certification framework to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
Tripartite collaboration covering the entire value chain
The tripartite partnership played an active role in defining technical requirements and sustainability guidelines. And the achieved ISCC PlUS certification enables full traceability and transparent communication across the value chain on the origin and credentials of the raw materials.
Xingda is committed to building a sustainable and transparent supply chain and has actively promoted sustainable steel reinforcement products to the tyre industry. It has successfully validated the use of recycled steel - at ratios ranging from 40% to 100% - in steel cord and bead wire applications, and has set clear targets to achieve 40% recycled steel content by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
Pirelli is a pioneering tyre manufacturer that initiated and participated in this ISCC PLUS pilot project and is amongthe first tyre makers to introduce ISCC PLUS-certified recycled steel into tyre production. Pirelli is committed to expanding the use of recycled and bio-based materials with the goal to place on the market by 2030 a tyre with more than 80% of bio‑based and recycled materials, while reaching 40% on total raw materials use.
NISCO leads the industry in low-carbon steel production. With its state-of-the-art electric arc furnace and dedicated process and quality control, the company offers high-quality green special steel to the entire automotive industry value chain . NISCO aims to peak its carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
ISCC PLUS certification: a benchmark for circularity
ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is a globally recognized certification system designed to ensure the traceability of recycled and renewable materials across complex supply chains. The ISCC PLUS certification awarded to this tripartite partnership project ensures that the recycled steel meets rigorous sustainability and traceability requirements.
A new paradigm for the global tyre industry
The tripartite ISCC PLUS certification creates a replicable model for the global tyre industry: the entire supply chain, from scrap steel to tyres, can be tracked and verified. This initiative aligns with accelerating demand for,and growing market expectations of, transparent and circular supply chains.
